Humpbacks and Minkes

Saturday March 23, 2013: 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm Kwisitis Visitors Centre, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

With Christie McMillan from Marine Education & Research Society

Humpback whales have made an incredible comeback in BC in recent years, but we are working on understanding some of remaining threats to their populations, including entanglement in fishing gear.  Minke whales are one of the least-studied species of whales in BC, and we have undertaken a study to start to learn how many are in BC, how much time they spend here, and what areas are important for them.  Come learn some background information on both species, the methods that we use to study them, and some of the things we have learned about humpbacks and minke whales in BC over the past 8 years.

Saturday March 23, 2013: 10:30 pm - 11:30 pm Ucluelet Aquarium, Ucluelet

with Caitlin Birdsall & Research Society

Whalefest celebrates the northward migration of the grey whale, but did you know that over 23 species of cetaceans have been recorded off our coast?  Join Caitlin Birdsall of the BC Cetacean Sightings Network for a Whale 101 to get to know our aquatic neighbors.  From the petite harbour porpoise to the massive fin whale, we’ll investigate cetacean diversity through a multi-media presentation featuring acoustic recordings and video.   Uncover their unique natural histories, the threats they face, and how coastal citizens can participate in stewardship and research through the Sightings Network. The talk will have you informed, inspired, and ready to become a cetacean citizen scientist.
