7 - 9pm Whalefest Literary SpoutOff
Gray Whale Deli, Ucluelet West Coast poets, writers & speakers offer up an eclectic evening of spoken word, literary pieces and translated, intimate mind-spill. Presented by Clayoquot Writer’s Group and Toastmasters. Donations welcome.

7pm Vancouver Island Whales & Whale Researchers Part 2 
Clayoquot Community Theatre, Tofino.  Clayoquot Biosphere Trust (7-7:30pm) opens the evening with a stunning slide presentation highlighting the land and marine areas of this 350,000 hectare Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the role of the CBT. Realm of the Killer Whales documentary film screening (7:30 -  8:30 p.m) (1 hr. / Ocean Wilds series, PBS 2001)  In spring, the waters off British Columbia greet the arrival of two great hordes from the open sea - herring and salmon.  Predators join in a harvesting frenzy, but none are as efficient in their hunts as the region's pods of killer whales.  Film m aker Feodor Pitcairn films a side of these powerful creatures few see - their efforts to maintain a close family life.   Updates the work of several Vancouver Island whale resea r chers also featured in the 1989 documentary "Island of Whales."  Hosted and sponsored by Remote Passages Marine Excursions.

Tofino Botanical Gardens, Tofino What are the ingredients for a coastal temperate rainforest? Join naturalists for a walk through the Tofino Botanical Gardens to learn what makes a rainforest! Wickaninnish Centre, PRNPR Join Alana Phillips of the Vancouver Aquarium as she highlights the BC Cetacean Sightings Network and what they’re doing to help conserve whale species in BC.  Including information on the Be Whale Wise guidelines, preventing depredation, and appropriate response to marine mammal incidents (strandings, entanglements, etc). Also featuring research from the work of Lance Barrett-Leonard.

2pm From Risk to Recovery- Protecting Species at Risk
Wickaninnish Centre, PRNPR Join local marine mammal biologist Wendy Szaniszlo & PRNPR Species At Risk Communications Specialist in a presentation focused on identifying & protecting Species At Risk in the PRNPR.

2-4pm Sea Creature Cookie Creators!

7pm By-the-Wind Sailors: Visitors from the Open Ocean
Clayoquot Field Station at the Tofino Botanical Gardens, Tofino A few times a year, our Pacific Rim beaches are littered with thousands of small jellyfish, each ringed in an iridescent blue and sporting a jaunty sail. These jellyfish are by-the-wind sailors (Velella vellela), normally found only on the open ocean. Join local marine biologist Josie Osborne to find out more about these intriguing creatures and why they visit us so infrequently. Meet at the Clayoquot Field Station at the Tofino Botanical Gardens, Tofino
Kids – this is your excuse to get MUDDY! Come on down to the “squishy side” of Tofino where hectares and hectares of mud support all kinds of amazing life, from tiny clams to huge grey whales! We’ll go on a scavenger hunt to find out just what lives in the mud! Parents – we definitely advise that you bring a change of clothes. Sponsored by the Tofino Botanical Gardens Foundation & the Raincoast Education Society.

10am Parade of Whales & Wonders and the annual Pet & Doll Parade
Begins at Wickaninnish School (meet there at 9:40 to participate), Tofino Come and bring your pets, favourite dolls, or costumes and join us in the parade! Watch for annual favourite features and some new surprises. Parade ends at the Tofino Legion where more activities will unravel…

Join in a fun-filled research trip in Barkley Sound. We will be traveling by zodiac with Brian Congdon, a former Park Warden of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve who has been conducting local tours for 30 years. Brian is very knowledgeable about the natural and cultural history of Barkley Sound and has supported Wendy with her sea lion research and whale surveys for over 8 years. Together they will introduce you to local marine mammals and involve you in identifying individual whales, discovering what they eat and investigating sea lion movements. We’ll enjoy the beauty of Barkley Sound and watch for seals, eagles and sea birds along the way.

11am Aché Brasil Workshop - Tofino
Tofino Legion, Tofino (see website) Join performers from our featured entertainment act Aché Brasil for an interactive, all-body experiential workshop for most ages. Coho Room – Weigh West Marine Resort, Tofino With First Nations weavers Rose Wilson and Molly Haipee, with family & friends – make a cedar creation using traditional techniques and learn about the history, preparation and uses of this coastal art form. At the ArtSplash! Art Show, Wickaninnish Centre, PRNPR Meet Marion – the artist behind the magical image at the face of this year’s festival - and have her sign a limited edition version of the Whale Festival 2008 poster.

4pm Basking Sharks: The Slaughter of BC’s Gentle Giants
Wild Heather Books, Ucluelet Vancouver Island marine conservationist & sustainable fisheries analyst Scott Wallace (& perhaps local experienced mariner Brian Gisborne) present based on their book documenting the tragic tale of the basking shark, a fish the size of a London bus, once prolific along the BC coast. Following WWII, being considered a ‘nuisance’, it took roughly 20 yrs for industry, government, and media to virtually exterminate the slow-moving and placid basking shark. An engaging presentation that puts our actions and our ecosystems on the same playing field.

7pm The Devilfish Feast & Film w/ Floathouse Restaurant nibblies & Inner Rhythm surf video screening
The Floathouse Restaurant at Barkley Station – Small Craft Harbour, Ucluelet Mingle, munch & catch a flick at Ucluelet’s floating restaurant. Test a taste of the culinary up-and-coming Floathouse team! Participate in Open Mic entertainment, and win door prizes sponsored by Inner Rhythm Surf Shop!

Tin Wis Oceanside Resort – MacKenzie Beach, Tofino Experience being hosted by the Tin Wis Oceanside Resort: Traditional Nuu-Chah-Nulth bannock & salmon BBQ featuring The Khowutzun Tzinquaw Dancers, guest speaker hereditary whaling chief Elmer Frank, Jamie’s Passport to Adventure prize draw, and other special guests.
